Protein Bars

Standard

In a large saucepan, melt 3/4 cup almond butter and 3/4 cup local raw honey. Once melted and mixed, add 4 cups Gluten Free Brown Rice Cereal (I use Erewhorn). You can also add 1 cup nuts such as almonds or cashews. Press into a large pan lined with parchement paper to keep it from sticking. Drizzle dark chocolate for added yumminess and keep refrigerated. Cut into bars or squares after cooled.

How do we supplement?

Standard

As a general rule, you get most of your nutrients from your food if you follow the paleo diet. But, we do use some supplements. On a daily basis I take:

A probiotic – to keep my gut healthy and ward off any illness. Again, if following a strict paleo diet, this isn’t necessary. Russ eats sauerkraut and therefore doesn’t need this. I open up a capsule and sprinkle it into the girl’s first cup of almond milk. I like Jarrow but needs to be refrigerated.

Omega fish oil capsule. I may switch to fermented cod liver oil. Will update soon.

Monolaurin – used as an anti-viral. The girls and I take this daily to prevent illness.

Vitamin D – not needed if you are outside a lot during the summer. But we use Carlson’s liquid Vitamin D drops 4000iu. And the girls get a drop in their milk daily as well.

Magnesium (we use CALM) – used to help sleep and keep bowels regular. Very common deficiency.

When sick, we give the girls Sambucus, a mix of echinacea and elderberry.

Lip Balm Recipe (7-8 tubes)

Standard

Place a glass jar in a pot of boiling water. Melt 1 Tbsp beeswax, 1 Tbsp shea butter, 1/2 Tbsp coconut oil, 1/2 Tbsp almond oil, 1/4 Tbsp local raw honey and a few drops of Vitamin E oil. Whisk well….honey is difficult to blend. Pour into empty lip balm tubes and let cool completely before use. You can also add essential oil if you want more flavor and scent. I did not. I like the natural honey flavor. Getting it into the tubes is a little tricky. I tried a medicine dropper and it didn’t work. I’d suggest a small funnel and do it while still hot. Love this stuff! Even used old “princess” tubes of lip balm cleaned out for some for my girls.

The most AMAZING lotion

Standard

Place a glass jar in a pot of boiling water. Melt 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup coconut oil, 1/4 cup beeswax, 2 Tbsp shea butter, 1 tsp vitamin E oil and any essential oils (I used approx 1 tsp almond extract for scent). Once melted and mixed well, store in a tub like container. This isn’t your typical pump bottle lotion. You must scoop it out for use. But it’s worth it! Wonderful stuff!

Oxy Clean

Standard

2 cups water
1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
1 cup Baking Soda

Mix well in spray bottle and let set on stains 30 min prior to washing.

If the entire load of laundry needs more whitening, add 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 cup baking soda to the load.

Liquid Laundry Detergent

Standard

Grate and melt a bar of Dr. Bronner’s soap in 2 quarts of boiling water. Fill a 5 gallon bucket with 4 gallons of hot water. Pour in the melted soap, along with 1 cup Borax and 1 cup washing soda and mix well. Leave at least 24 hours with lid on, then open and stir and it’s now ready to use! Use 1/2 cup per load of laundry.
